The bat is the Scout's melee weapon of choice. It has a fast "reload" time and allows the scout to quickly take out enemies without wasting ammo.

The bat is great for enclosed or otherwise tight maps where you may not be able to aim properly. It makes for a great weapon on weakened opponents as you can just rush them and get a hit or two to finish them off. Personal preferences may have players acting differently but the majority rule dictates that it is best to fight evenly and fairly against a melee weapon up close by fairing against them with a melee weapon of your own.

On open maps, the bat is great because Scouts can stand in a corner and when a player walks by they can bum rush them with the bat and continue to keep moving at the same time.
