Background
Half-Life 2: Episode One is the first installment in a trilogy of episodes by Valve Corporation's Half-Life 2 series. Unlike previous Half Life games, it does not require a previous Half-Life 2 download linked to the user's Steam account in order to play. Episode One takes advantage of the Valve-created Source engine, featuring several various improvements compared to other games using the same engine.
Episode One takes place immediately after the events of Half-Life 2, just out side of the war-torn City 17 area. Theoretical physics scientist Gordon Freeman is tagged along by Alyx Vance and her robot, Dog, throughout the game whereas they supply the player with assistance and help unfold the story.
Gameplay
There are no noticeable variations between Half-Life 2 and Episode One. Players are urged to navigate through a linear series of levels, consisting of "chapters", coming across a variety of enemies. Episode One features puzzle solving like the series is known for, consisting of both combat-related and physics-related puzzles. To help players become more familiar with the basic controls and what they will be facing in the future, tutorial-like tasks were implanted in the game, as a part of the campaign. The gravity gun also makes its return in Episode One-proving great use such as blocking falling debris from killing Gordon and Alyx throughout the campaign.
Alyx Vance is described as a "personality code" as opposed to an "AI code", marking their attention that she's a very complementing and caring personality companion towards Gordon and other characters. Alyx also assists the player while in a chapter, such as covering you from a mounted turret or escorting you various places across the map.
The setting, City 17, is designed to reflect the massive inflictions that the Combine and aliens had caused.
