Background
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch was released on November 30, 2004, approximately two weeks after Half-Life 2's release. When Half-Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004, it was packaged without multiplayer, and instead with Counter-Strike: Source. Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) is a multiplayer game which pits a team of terrorists against a team of counter-terrorists in multiple series of game modes involving bomb-defusing and hostage rescue. Although CS:S was a hit, die hard Half-Life fans wanted a multiplayer game that was more loyal to Half-Life. A few weeks later, Valve Corporation released Half-Life 2: Deathmatch on Steam.
Gameplay
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch lands the player in an all-out battle either between two teams or in a free-for-all format. The game can be comparable to that of Half-Life's deathmatch gamemode. There are numerous weapons in this game, which are all present in Half-Life 2's single player mode. The game's scoreboard is calculated through the amount of kills one player or team scores.
