The Flamethrower is a Level 1 Flamethrower that shoots 22.5 flame particles per second and up close that can add up to 139.5 damage per second. At farther distances it outputs lower damage and is much harder to keep a steady stream on a target accurately making it ineffective at medium range and utterly useless at long range. After being lit on fire with the Flamethrower the target may burn for ten seconds, except for another Pyro, and take damage over that time. A Pyro is invulnerable to the afterburn damage but not the direct damage of the Flamethrower or Backburner.
The afterburn can be extinguished by the Medic's Medigun, a Dispenser's healing stream, contact with water, friendly Jarate, the standard Flamethrower compression blast or any type of Health pack.
The secondary fire of the Flamethrower is a compressed blast of air which can send Rockets, Stickies, Grenades, Flares, Baseballs, Arrows, Jarates and enemies flying away from the player. This can be particularly usefull for deflecting impending damage but also for knocking enemies into bottomless pits in the map and killing them.
